Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique

The Beastie Boys Paul's boutique is one of my favorite records. I enjoy listening  to music in my car and this is one that I have been playing while rolling down the street for years. It's great driving music

I was turned on to it by a friend and musical colleague. I was not really into any kind of "rap" back then. But this cat opened my eyes to some real entertainment. Not ALL rap music is bad you know?

The record is a "bible of samples" it's fun to listen to it and try to figure out what song the samples came from. This has been a favorite thing to do when listening to "loop" based music. This has been a very controversial subject because of the original artists becoming upset that people were "stealing" their sounds.

In any event this record has it all...They were even bold enough to sample the Beatles. You rarely hear the Beatles sampled on this type of music. I'm not sure why. I read recently that when they were questioned about blatantly using the Beatles as samples they replied that it would certainly be "totally cool" to be sued by the Beatles.

The rymns are in the usual Beastie boy style of trading lines back and forth and telling funny stories... Usually about getting drunk, high. Along with general menasis to society..

Some Highlights

  • Shake your Rump - Great deep toned scratching
  • Hey Ladies - All in the house
  • Eggman - Dig the samples from the movie Psycho
  • Shadrach - Like from the Bible
This is the follow up to license to I'll which was a huge success for the band...This one did not do near as well... It is underrated in my opinion and is the best one they ever did..
